BlockPets

Pixel pets that hatch from Bitcoin blocks. Mint an egg, and 144 blocks later the hash of that block decides what hatches. Nobody knows in advance, not even us.

Hard cap: 2,100 eggsEvery egg is a child of one Block Pets parent inscription. The renderer counts the children on-chain: anything after child #2,100 shows "Not a Block Pet".
Nobody picks traitsYour pet comes from the hash of a block that doesn't exist yet when you mint. Not you, not us, not the next minter.
The art checks itselfThe renderer inscription verifies every egg: exact egg code, the Block Pets parent and its place in the supply. Copies show up as "Not a Block Pet".
Your keys stay yoursYour wallet only sends a payment. The site never asks for a seed phrase or a private key.

How it works

01

Mint

Your wallet pays once. After one confirmation the mint server inscribes your egg as a child of the Block Pets parent. The price goes to the treasury in the same transaction.

02

Wait

Your egg is confirmed in block N. It hatches at block N + 144, about one day later. The countdown on the egg updates by itself.

03

Hatch

When block N + 144 is mined, its hash is mixed with your egg's id. That number picks the species, colours and gear.

04

Keep

The pet is drawn by code stored on Bitcoin. Any Ordinals explorer or marketplace that supports recursion shows it the same way.

seed = sha256( "<egg inscription id>" + ":" + hash of block (mint height + 144) )
traits = weighted picks from the seed bytes
Why it's fairA block hash can't be known before the block is mined. Not even the person who minted the egg (or the creator) can steer the result.
Why it's cappedOnly the parent's key can make a child, and the renderer checks the child's number on-chain through ord's recursive endpoints. Child #2,101 and later are not Block Pets.
Why it lastsThe art, the hatch rule and the checks live in one renderer inscription. No server is needed to see your pet, ever.

Questions

Good questions

What is a Block Pet?

A 40×40 pixel pet stored fully on Bitcoin as an Ordinals inscription. It starts as an egg and hatches 144 blocks after it's minted.

Why can't anyone know my pet early?

The traits come from sha256 of your egg's id and the hash of the hatch block. That block doesn't exist when you mint, so nobody can predict or choose the result.

What do I pay?

The egg price (paid to the treasury inside the inscription transaction), your share of the network fee, and 330 sats of postage that stay with your egg. Eggs paid in the same block are inscribed together, which keeps the fee low. Your wallet adds its own small fee for sending.

How is the supply capped?

Every egg is a child of one parent inscription. The renderer asks ord for the parent's children in order and only draws the first 2,100. Copies, eggs without the parent, and child #2,101 or later show "Not a Block Pet".

Which wallets work?

UniSat, Xverse, Leather and OKX. Your egg goes to your Ordinals (taproot) address. Use a wallet that protects inscriptions, and never type your seed phrase into a website.

What if I close the page mid-mint?

Nothing is lost: once your payment confirms, the server inscribes the egg to your wallet anyway. Come back and press "Show status", or check My eggs. If the collection sells out before your payment confirms, it is refunded.

Can I mint more than one?

Yes: up to 3 eggs per wallet, and up to 3 in a single mint with one payment. The mint server enforces the 3-per-wallet limit. The hard limit checked on-chain is the 2,100 eggs.

Where do I see my pet?

Here in The Nest and My eggs, and on any Ordinals explorer such as ordinals.com. Marketplaces that support recursive inscriptions show the live egg and the hatched pet.

Can the supply change?

No. The supply of 2,100 is baked into the renderer inscription, which can never be edited. Even the parent's owner can't make egg 2,101 a Block Pet.

What are the special pets?

Pets that hatch on a difficulty adjustment block (every 2,016 blocks) get the Epoch Hatch sparkles. Hatch blocks whose hash ends in 777 give Lucky 777. Pure luck of the chain.
